Eighth Graders’ Communication Strategies in English Classroom Activities at SMP Negeri 3 Kalibening

This study aimed to investigate the eighth graders’ communication strategies in English classroom activities at SMP Negeri 3 Kalibening. research conducted a qualitative approach with descriptive method. The observational data were collected by using video and audio recorder, sheet, triangulated structured interview. analysis procedures consisted of reduction, display, conclusion drawing verification Miles & Huberman’s (1994) framework. Communication Strategies (CSs) taxonomy proposed Celce-Murcia et al. (1995) was used as references identify classify types CSs. revealed that learners employed 5 CSs: avoidance or reduction strategy, achievement compensatory stalling time gaining self-monitoring interactional 11 sub-types those categories discussion, group presentation activities. findings also showed CSs compensate for their linguistics problems keep going while participating made valuable contribution introducing increasing students' awareness use real-life situations.
